Video Commentary

When I was in sixth grade, my class and I went on a field trip to the Henry Dorley Zoo in Omaha, Neb. I remember being excited for the same reason as everyone else; we got to get out of school even though it was only for a day. The night before the big day, I stayed at my dad’s house. He was helping me pack my lunch and as we were doing so he decided that we needed to go up to the Pump and Pantry in Doniphan to get some snacks to take along with me so that I had something fun to eat.
As we were on our way, it didn’t take us long since it’s only about five or six miles from home, he told me that I could pick out three or four things of my choice. It didn’t matter whether it was candy, chips, something to drink, etc. just whatever I wanted. I’m not sure what all I picked out except for one thing in particular. I remember getting this Starburst sucker that changed both colors and flavors as you ate it. I wasn’t allowed to eat it until the next day on our field trip because it was for my lunch. For some reason, I remember that it was all I could think of and couldn’t wait until I was able to eat it the next day.
The morning of the exciting field trip to the Henry Dorley Zoo arrived and I was bouncing off the walls with excitement because I was excited to see all the different animals and secretly because I wanted to eat that Starburst sucker in my lunch box. The drive down to Henry Dorley Zoo took about three hours and my friends and I talked and played games such as tic tac toe and hangman on the way down. Talking to my friends and playing those games helped to forget about that Starburst sucker for the time being. In fact I had almost forgotten about that Starburst sucker until lunchtime because as soon as we arrived at the zoo we immediately began looking through all the exhibits, learning about the all the animals we saw by reading the displays that were posted in front of all the cages and environments.
I remember walking through this exhibit that was like a rainforest. It was this big open room with lush tropical plants and different species of wildlife found in the rainforest such as sloths and toucans. There was a constant spray of water mist all time to simulate the constant amount of rain that the rainforest receives.
Lunchtime arrived and I was finally able to eat that sucker that I had been thinking about all day the day before. I ate my sandwich first, followed by my chips, cookies and bottle of grape juice. I saved the starburst sucker for last and savored it, taking in each flavor at a time. It was well worth the wait and anticipation because the sucker was awesome.
As soon as we got home, I told my dad about all the things we did and saw. I especially made sure to tell him how good the sucker was and that I was glad he took me up to Pump and pantry and allowed me to pick out what I wanted.

Korn

I am going to the Korn concert this coming Thursday with my friend Brian. I am really excited and plan on getting up front in the mosh pit. The last time we went to a concert together, I ended up having some guy that was body surfing land on my head. It was expected though simply because I was in the mosh pit. A week later I went to the chiropracter and he wasn't too happy with me because I was all out of place from my neck clear down to my lower back. Oh well, I'm still gonna keep going to concerts.

Family

I was talking to my mom the other day about how I sometimes feel as though I am the outcast in my family simply because I tend to feel ignored by my siblings from time to time. She agreed with me because she sometimes felt that way when she was growing up.
I don't think that my siblings do anything intentionally, it's just that we all have our own lives and group of friends that we associate with. I know that we all love each other, it just isn't expressed much. It probably doesn't help much that I am the only one who likes to read as a hobby.

World War II

Some photos were recently donated to the Holocaust Museum that showed Nazi Party members digging up graves of American soldiers. There were some other photos that showed Americans after they were rescued by fellow comrades. Their bodies were so skinny friail looking because they were starved and forced to work all the time in German tunnels. If you follow this link http://news.aol.com/article/photo-nazis-dig-up-american-grave/445643?icid=mainhp-laptopdl1link3http%3A%2F%2Fnews.aol.com%2Farticle%2Fphoto-nazis-dig-up-american-grave%2F445643 it will take you to where you can view the photos and read about them.

I know the exteamities of the war and the Holocaust are well known, I just still can't believe some of the stories and pictures and just how bad things really were. Even with the musuem, we will never know what it was like to live through those times.

Grandma Eleanor

Macaroni and cheese, sugar cookies with frosting and sprinkles, and raspberry sherbet punch. These were just a few of the homemade goodies that my Grandma Eleanor would make for Christmas and all the other holidays and family functions.
Every Christmas my sister, brothers, cousins and I would all be SOOO excited for the homemade goodies that we would forget about our presents until it was time to open them. We would go directly to the kitchen and grab as many cookies as our parents would let us have before dinner. They would then send us downstairs to play and anxiously wait in anticipation for the macaroni and cheese, sherbet punch and the rest of dinner.
As we would be driving to grandma’s house in York, NE, my siblings and I would be talking about what food we were most excited for and the result was always the same: all three!!! We were never able to pick just one, we would constantly be changing our minds and then we would be like I’m excited for all of them because I can’t choose just one.
There was always such a high demand for the sugar cookies with all of us kids being so close together in age that my grandma Eleanor would make dozens of sugar cookies ahead of time and freeze them so that they were ready for us to gobble down. Even as we got older, we still ate a lot of the sugar cookies. I think ate more than the others since cookies are my weak spot. This still holds true today.
Homemade macaroni and cheese. Where do I even begin on this one? My grandma has always made macaroni and cheese from her own recipe and has never made instant macaroni and cheese. Grandma Eleanor’s macaroni and cheese was even a big hit when my father was a little boy. He and his brothers and sister loved it just as much as my brothers, sister, cousins and I do.
This dish has become a tradition in our family. There is not one family function that has gone without this popular dish. My dad has made it for us and I have I even drove home to Doniphan from Kearney just to eat some. My sister has made it for her husband and his family and they have become as addicted to it as my family is.
It was my grandma’s birthday last Friday. She would have been 82 had the cancer not taken her form us two years ago, but I’m proud to say that she gave it her all and fought the disease for ten long years. My dad had cried that day. It was one of the rare times I had ever seen him cry and the only other exception that I can think of was at my sisters’ wedding on Valentine’s Day earlier this year. I am very close to my dad and it was hard for me to see him so distraught.
I know she isn’t able to be with us any more in person but I do know that she is with us in our spirits and our hearts. My grandma had loved to fly when she was younger and had always loved planes. The day of her funeral, a little Cessna 140 had flew over her burial as the minister was delivering her speech. It was a sign to us all that we should continue with our lives and not to mourn for her because she is in a better place and that is what she would have wanted us to do. It was a very emotional day for the family when she was laid to rest that hot July day. She has been and will be forever missed.

Sring Break

Most students spend their spring break going to the beach or doing some other exciting activity that at least gets them away from their monotonous ordinary lives. Some students however, are not that fortunate in the means of being able to go somewhere due to monetary reasons or because of their work schedules and are forced to stay home over spring break. It amazes me as to how much you don’t think about working until it’s when you want to go have fun with all of your other friends who are all going out partying or going on vacations somewhere.

I was one of those unfortunate students who had to stay home over spring break because there was no one else to work. One employee requested the week off because she was going back home to Omaha and was not allowed to stay in the dorms over break. Another employee called in sick a few times and I was called in to cover the hours, which was no surprise to me. Now, I don’t mind working over break, but because of the one employee gone and the other sick, I had to work every day over break and even a few days before spring break even started which amounted to nine days worked in a row. Don’t get me wrong, I do like my job, it’s just that a nine day stretch for any job will become tiring and sometimes very stressful depending on the type of job you have.

On the lighter side of things, my spring break did have its fun moments. One of my friends got married the Saturday over spring break before classes resumed on Monday morning and the reception was a blast. There was an open bar all night until the keg ran out, and then you had to pay for your drink which was fine because by the time that happened I was already a little tipsy and feeling pretty good.

Towards the middle of the reception the groomsmen and I snuck out and went to the hotel room where the newlywed couple was staying. We had already gotten permission from the hotel staff to trash or “decorate” the room as some might call it. The ironic yet funny part of this scenario aside from decorating the room was that one of the groomsmen’s parents were the ones who provided all the necessary goods required to decorate the room.

Some of the items used in the decorating would include shaving cream, rice krispies, condoms, colored Easter grass, and a pair of women’s panties. Doors, walls, mirrors and picture frames were all decorated with shaving cream. Light fixtures were decorated with the Easter grass and had condoms handing from them. Rice krispies were put under the sheets and Easter grass was spread all over the room. Not really sure what happened to the panties.
Some of us got shaving cream on ourselves, including myself, when we were finished decorating the room as we were throwing away the empty cans. I had gotten some on my shoulder and dress which I so casually wiped on one of the groomsman’s face and instead of retaliating he helped me clean off my dress and then we proceeded to head back to the reception. There was one other thing that was done to the room which I will not explain because it is somewhat gross and should not be mentioned.

Overall I had a fairly exciting spring break even though I had to work every day. As crazy as it may sound, I would not change anything about my spring break. I liked it just the way it was.
